How do I?

Register for a program or event

It’s easy to register for a library event. Click on the calendar of events; then, click on the event you want to attend. The event will be displayed. Fill out the registration page and click “Submit.” You may also call the main library number, (630) 896-0240, to register by phone.

Get a library card

North Aurora residents, 18 and older, may apply for a library card at the Messenger Public Library User Services desk. A photo ID and proof of North Aurora residency is required (utility bill, mortgage/lease). Cards for residents under 18 may be requested by a parent or guardian (responsible party). If you are unable to come into the library, residents of North Aurora can apply for a digital library card. A digital card allows access for 90 days to our streaming and downloadable video, music, e-books, e-audiobooks, and electronic resources. Digital library cards must be converted to a full-service card if you want to place holds, and check out DVDs, music CDs, a hotspot, and print material. Register for a digital library card.

Access my account

Click on the “My Account” tab at the top of the page. Enter your library card number and PIN (last 4 digits of your telephone number). This will display your account, including checkouts and holds.

Use the catalog

You can search the catalog by keyword, subject, author, or title. Enter the information in the search box on the web site home page. Click on the search button. Advanced searches are available in the Keyword dropdown.

Place a Hold

Once you find an item in the catalog, you can request it by clicking on the “Place Hold” button next to the format you prefer. You will be asked to enter your library card number and PIN (last 4 digits of your phone number). Click “Continue.” Using the drop-down box, choose the library where you would like to pick up your hold. Click on “Submit Hold Request.” A message will be displayed letting you know that your hold was successful, and you will be notified when the item is available for pickup.

Messenger has a robust collection of e-books and e-audiobooks that you can download to your computer or other device. To access these collections, search the library’s catalog or search the individual platforms by using the links below. You can also use free downloadable apps provided by each platform for your device to search for titles.

Check out a Museum or Entertainment Pass

Messenger Library cardholders in good standing can receive free or discounted admission and other discounts to a variety of exciting museums, cultural venues, and recreational facilities in the Illinois. Renew my Items

Items eligible for renewal and not on hold for another patron will be automatically renewed up to two times.

Borrow Items from Other Libraries

Messenger Public Library is part of the SWAN Library Consortium, consisting of over 100 libraries. If you cannot find an item at Messenger Public Library, you may search the catalog to see if another SWAN library owns the item. Messenger patrons may place holds on items owned by other SWAN libraries. You can have the item sent to Messenger or choose to pick it up at another SWAN library.

Use the Wi-Fi at the Library

There is no password required to use the Wi-Fi at the library. Go to network settings on your device and look for “Messenger Library.” Click to join the network.

Volunteer at the Library

You can make a difference at your library! Our dedicated group of volunteers assists the Messenger Public Library in fulfilling its mission to inform, connect and enrich the community of North Aurora.

We are always looking for individuals who would like to donate their time, skills, and knowledge by volunteering at the library. If you would like to be matched with a volunteer project or are interested in earning service hours at the Messenger Library, please contact the appropriate volunteer coordinator.

Reserve a Meeting Room

The meeting rooms of Messenger Public Library (MPL) are available to support the library’s mission to inform, connect, and enrich the community of North Aurora. Rooms are used to support MPL functions, meetings, and programs. Activities sponsored or co-sponsored by the library or a library-related organization have priority.

Reservation requests are limited to:
• One time per calendar month, per group, for the Main Meeting Room.
• One time per week (defined as Monday-Sunday), per group, for the Conference, Tinker Youth Program Room, or Meeting Rooms 1 or 6.
To prevent monopolization, reservations for the Main Meeting Room, the Conference Room, Tinker Youth Program Room, and Rooms 1 and 6 may be made no more than 90 days (about 3 months) in advance and should be made through our website.
Online reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Requests to use a room without a reservation are subject to first come, first served use with no guarantee of space availability. Same day requests must be made through the Adult Services Department (630) 896-0240, press 3.
Room reservation requests by for-profit businesses or groups not defined as a 501(c)3 or a civic group must contact the Adult Services Department by phone (630) 896-0240 or asd@messengerpl.org. For-profit groups will be charged $25 per hour for room use. Fees must be paid prior to use by cash or check (credit card payments are not accepted) or the reservation will be canceled.

MPL also has Study Rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis for one 2-hour session per day. The library has four study rooms available. When the study rooms are open, at least one user per room must sign in at the User Services Desk and provide either a valid Messenger Library Card or a valid photo ID. Click here for more information.
